Coconut Oil For Hair, Health, Pulling And Everything Else!

If you are anything like me, you’re probably suffering from information overload when it comes to nutrition and your health. Where do you even start? What best and why can’t they just keep it simple for goodness sake!

I know, I’ve been there, done this, done that and just about everything else in between!

Information in both the medical and health community and the food industry is changing continuously and some of it is conflicting and out of date.  Remember for example when food advertisers and their cohorts were telling you to stay away from fat, especially saturated fat? It was thought to be an unhealthy choice and a factor in cardiovascular disease.

Well fast forward to today and a very different picture is emerging. One that supports the consumption of some saturated fat such as coconut oil, as a healthy part of your diet.

GCoconutOilCoconut oil has been let out of the bag and is trending high on the wave of popularity! People can’t get enough of it and it has so many uses for your health and beautification that I’d be remiss not to pass on what I know.

It has been linked to benefits to heart function, diabetes, resistance to virus and bacteria, Alzheimer’s prevention, detoxification, weight loss and much more.

Coconut oil has powerful antioxidant action on the body slowing down the oxidation process that can lead to cardiovascular disease and skin ageing.

But before getting in to the heart of the matter, let’s dispel some of the myths on fat so that you can rebuild a healthy relationship with this poor misunderstood food group!

Dietary Fat is NOT your enemy but is actually a necessary part of your diet for the following reasons:

  • Dietary Fat typically provide more than half of the body’s energy needs.
  • Dietary Fat help with the absorption and transportation of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K that are necessary for good vision, bone health, limiting harmful free radicals and blood clotting respectively.
  • Fat provides a protective layer around essential organs and nerves.
  • Dietary Fat supports normal heart function, immune health and hormone production.
  • Essential fatty acids in fat play a role in brain development and managing inflammation.

Coconut oil got a bad rap in the past due to being high in saturated fat but all fat is not created equal!

Some saturated fat like the one found in coconut oil are Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) and so are metabolized differently. This makes them a quick energy source for weight loss because they are immediately converted by your liver into energy, rather than being stored as fat.

This alternative energy fuel is known as ketones or ketone bodies and has been found to have therapeutic effects on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.

There are numerous reasons to rekindle your relationship with fat but put simply, you need fat in your diet! And with the health benefits of coconut oil it’s the only choice for you and your family!

So why is it so cool to get with the coconut? Here are at least 9 reasons why.

  1. Coconut Oil Is Loaded With Lauric Acid

What so good about lauric acid? Your body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, that kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Because coconut oil has the most concentrated amount of lauric acid on the planet it has shown to be a potent antimicrobial against the yeast Candida Albicans and other fungal that cause ringworm, athlete’s foot and other fungal conditions.

It has shown to be effective against viruses that cause influenza, and even more serious viruses such as hepatitis C, and HIV (the AIDS virus).

In his book The Coconut Oil Miracle, 5th Edition Dr Fife calls coconut oil nature’s marvellous germ fighter due to the medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s) and monoglycerides (their derivatives) that can kill or inactivate disease-causing microorganisms inside the body. Research has shown that MCT’s and monoglycerides are effective in killing a number of disease-causing microorganisms and unlike antibiotics which are only effective against bacteria, MCT’s  and monoglycerides can kill bacteria as well as viruses, fungi, and protozoa.

  1. Coconut Oil Is Great For Weight Loss

You may wonder how fat can help with weight loss and you would be right to question if we were talking about the long chain triglycerides (LCT’s) found in most oils.

Long-chain triglycerides  (LCTs), which make up the bulk of the Standard American Diet (SAD), range in length from 16 to 24 carbons. But MCTs are composed of only 4 to 14 carbon links.

Because the MCT’s found in coconut oil have fewer carbon atoms, it makes them easy to digest and immediately available as an energy source. Unlike LCT’s found in other oils that can be stored in the fat cells around your body, MCT’s simply have no place to go!

Coconut oil has shown to be particularly effective for reducing abdominal or belly fat. Either name, it is dangerous game to play with this type of fat because it is the most deadly! Research has found however that over a 12 week period, women who supplemented with 30 mL (1 ounce) of coconut oil per day saw a significant reduction in BMI and waist circumference.

  1. Burn More Fat With Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can crank up your metabolism and turn it into a fat burning furnace. The energy burned during digestion is called the ‘thermic effect of food’ (TEF). MCT’s are more than twice as thermogenic as long chain fats.

Research suggests a thermogenic increase of up to 50% in participants who were given MCT’s over a six day period. And the best part of all is the thermogenic effect can last up to 24 hours so you can keep the fire burning well after your delicious coconut stir-fried vegetable lunch!

With an elevated metabolism you can also look forward to feeling more energized minus the insulin spike!

  1. Super Heart Healthy

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. A heart attack occurs about every 20 seconds with a heart attack death about every minute.

If these numbers don’t frighten you, they should because nutrition is a huge factor in the health of your heart. Although coconut oil is predominantly a saturated fat, it has been repeatedly shown to be beneficial rather than detrimental on cholesterol levels and heart health.

Further Facts on Heart Disease

Lauric acid increases good HDL cholesterol in the blood to help improve cholesterol ratio levels. Coconut oil lowers cholesterol by promoting its conversion to pregnenolone, a molecule that is a precursor to many of the hormones our bodies need. Coconut can help restore normal thyroid function. When the thyroid does not function optimally, it can contribute to higher levels of bad cholesterol.

Ray Peat “As far as the evidence goes… coconut oil, added regularly to a balanced diet, lowers cholesterol to normal by promoting its conversion into pregnenolone,” he writes. “Coconut-eating cultures in the tropics have consistently lower cholesterol than people in the U.S.”

Cultures such as the Tokelauans in the South Pacific and Kitavans in New Guinea traditionally consume large quantities of coconut oil as part of their regular diet. Evidence shows these communities have thrived and have very low incidence of heart disease and have normal cholesterol level.
